Happy Mothers Day! Making Crafty Presents with Hama Beads

Happy Mothers Day! That’s right it’s that special time of year when we all spend a day giving thanks for mums and all they do for us. For us dads it’s the time of year where we take them out on our own to get mum some a nice present, chocolates and maybe some flowers. It’s also the time when we try our damnedest to coerce them into either making a handmade card or at the very least sign the one they eventually picked from Clintons.

This year the mum in our house has two cards because we spent so long in the shop trying to pick one that the children could agree on that I eventually lost the will to live and said they could have both of the ones they’d selected. I got to leave the shop with my sanity mostly intact, they get to pick the cards they wanted and mum gets two cards. It’s a triple win, albeit one we can’t maintain every year.

Another way that the kids can express their love on Mothers Day is to get crafting! We have some very crafty kids in our house so it wouldn’t be Mothers Day unless they were making something. This year we’ve been sent an awesome package of crafty Hama beads to make the mum in our house something special for Mothers Day.

The pack we were sent was a particularly charming set that let us make all sorts of flowers, hearts and a couple of besotted owls.

Have a look at the gallery below to see how the guys got on with their Hama crafting! Both Marshall and Claudia loved playing with the beads and are excited to do even more crafts of their own. Morgan chose not to participate in this activity but we’ll see if he wants a go next time we get the beads out!

This was our first experience of Hama beads. We’ve previously tried out Aquabeads which are very similar but we’ve found that it can be hard to keep them in one place and often the beads escape into other positions or get popped out of place. Obviously no iron is required for Aquabeads but for that small concession Hama beads are really easy to use and make intricate patterns with. Claudia is still 4 yrs old and as such is just below the recommended age range, but she still found them really easy to use.

We’ll definitely be picking up some more Hama beads in the future and it’s a great way to make cute, geeky crafts for special occasions!

We’ve tried aqua beads too and found they fall apart easily – will have to give these a go

This looks such fun. My son has never been interested in these so I’ve never had a go. Tempted to buy myself some now though!

Yeah, we were the same but these were great! We’ve already been to the toy shops to have a poke about and see what other sets they have!
